Background

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD), the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC), the Education Bureau (EDB) and the Yan Oi Tong EcoPark Plastic Resources Recycling Centre (YOT PRRC) jointly organise the “Reduce Your Waste and Recycle Your Plastics Campaign” (the Campaign hereafter). The first phase of the Campaign is held in the New Territories West (North District, Kwai Tsing, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun and Yuen Long).

Objective

The Campaign aims at enhancing students’ awareness on waste reduction and recycling and cultivating their behavioural change, as well as reinforcing the message of waste reduction and proper recycling of unavoidable waste. Students are also encouraged to share the idea of waste reduction and recovery with their families and to participate in the Campaign with them. Under this Campaign, participating students are encouraged to put the unavoidable waste plastic bottles into the recycling bin with proper treatment, including cleaning the bottles thoroughly and removing their lids and labels before putting them into the recycling bin.

To encourage schools to take an active part in waste reduction and source separation of waste plastics, the Campaign consists of a competition and various awards to be presented to participating schools based on their performance. An additional set of recycling bin for collection of waste plastic bottles is provided to each participating school. Participating schools also have the priority in joining the activities for the Campaign, such as site visits to the YOT PRRC; workshops; drama performance organised by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre on the theme recycling of waste and a green concert.
